I. Love. This. memory. My first visit to Montreal was completely out of my comfort zone. I've been in corporate communications for most of my career, but in 2013 I found myself at a Python conference with a bunch of IT developers. I'm still not sure how I ended up on the short list to work our company's recruitment booth. People say that if you're a communicator you can talk about any and everything. 👀 Here I was talking computer language to people in the top percent of the industry. We talked Ruby, Python, Perl..and more. Am I a programmer or developer? Absolutely not, but I am a listener, and I leaned on our IT gurus to understand what they do, how they do it and more. Learning from them gave me the knowledge to hold real conversations with potential team members. I tied that information to more in depth discussion about our corporate culture, and voila...I was recruiting and speaking the language (computer language and all). Today was a hot tea kind of day and when I grabbed this mug, I remembered the day I communicated one of the most complex subjects I've ever known, all because I put into practice what my Granny taught me years ago. Be quiet and listen to people, you just might learn something. Here's to Sunday and the start of a new week! May you learn something new every day!
